You've made the decision to start ABA therapy for your child - congratulations on taking this important step! Now you're probably wondering: what actually happens in that first session? It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness about what's ahead.
At Happy Luna ABA Therapy, we understand that the unknown can feel overwhelming. That's why we've created this guide to walk you through exactly what to expect during your child's first ABA therapy session in Tampa.
Before the First Session: The Initial Assessment
Before your child's first official therapy session, our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will conduct a comprehensive assessment. This typically happens during a separate appointment and involves:
Parent Interview and Goal Setting
We'll sit down with you (without your child present initially) to discuss:
Your child's current skills and strengths
Areas where your child needs support
Your family's daily routines and schedule
Your priorities and goals for therapy
Any specific behaviors or challenges you're experiencing
Your child's interests, preferences, and motivators
This conversation helps us understand your unique situation and ensures therapy aligns with what matters most to your family.
Skills Assessment
During the assessment session, our BCBA will interact with your child in a relaxed, play-based way to observe their current abilities across different areas:
Communication and language skills
Social interaction and play skills
Daily living skills (dressing, eating, toileting)
Academic and pre-academic skills
Behavior patterns and responses to different situations
Don't worry - this isn't a test your child can "pass" or "fail." We're simply getting to know your child and understanding where they are right now so we can create the most effective treatment plan.
The First Therapy Session: What Happens
Once the assessment is complete and we've developed an individualized treatment plan, it's time for the first official therapy session. Here's what typically happens:
Building Rapport and Comfort
The first priority is helping your child feel comfortable with their therapist. We start slowly and follow your child's lead:
The therapist will engage in activities your child already enjoys
We'll use preferred toys, games, or activities identified during assessment
Sessions feel like play, not work
We move at your child's pace with no pressure
Some children warm up immediately, while others need a few sessions to feel comfortable. Both are completely normal!
Establishing Routine and Structure
ABA therapy works best with consistent routines. During the first session, we begin establishing:
A predictable session structure (greeting, activities, transitions, closing)
Visual schedules if helpful for your child
Clear expectations and boundaries
Positive reinforcement for participation
Beginning Skill Building
Even in the first session, we start working on goals - but in a natural, playful way:
Teaching happens during preferred activities and play
We use positive reinforcement (praise, access to favorite items, fun activities) when your child shows desired behaviors
Skills are broken down into small, achievable steps
Data collection begins to track progress from day one
Parent Involvement and Coaching
We believe parents are essential partners in therapy success. During or after the first session:
We'll explain what we're working on and why
You'll learn strategies you can use at home
We'll answer any questions you have
You'll receive updates on what we observed and next steps
Where Does the First Session Take Place?
At Happy Luna ABA Therapy, we provide services in the settings where your child spends their time:

How Long Is the First Session?
The length of the first therapy session varies based on your child's individual treatment plan, but typically:
Sessions range from 2-4 hours
Some children start with shorter sessions and build up
Frequency might be 2-5 days per week depending on needs
Your BCBA will recommend the optimal schedule for your child
What Should You Prepare?
To make the first session go smoothly, here are some helpful tips:
Before the Session:
Make sure your child is fed, rested, and comfortable
Have preferred snacks or drinks available if allowed
Set up a designated therapy space (for in-home sessions)
Share any recent changes in routine, health, or behavior with the therapist
What to Have On Hand:
Your child's favorite toys or activities
Any communication devices or tools your child uses
Comfort items if your child needs them
List of questions you want to ask
For Parents:
Be present for at least part of the session
Observe how the therapist interacts with your child
Ask questions as they come up
Take notes if helpful
Common First Session Questions
Will my child cry or resist?
Some children take to therapy immediately, while others need time to adjust. Both reactions are normal. Our therapists are trained to work through resistance gently and patiently. If your child is upset, we'll slow down, take breaks, and adjust our approach.
How quickly will I see progress?
Every child progresses at their own pace. Some families notice small improvements within the first few weeks, while other skills take longer to develop. The important thing is that progress is being made consistently, even if it's gradual. We track data carefully so you can see the changes over time.
What if my child doesn't like their therapist?
Rapport between therapist and child is crucial. If after a few sessions things aren't clicking, let us know. We can make adjustments to the approach or, if needed, consider a different therapist. Your child's comfort and progress are our top priorities.
Can I stay during sessions?
Absolutely! Especially during early sessions, we encourage parents to be present. As therapy continues, some parents choose to observe from nearby or use the time for other activities. We'll work with you to find what works best for your family and your child's learning.
What if I have concerns or questions?
Communication is key. Your BCBA and therapy team want to hear from you. We'll have regular check-ins, but you can reach out anytime with questions, concerns, or observations. We're partners in your child's progress.
What Happens After the First Session?
After that initial therapy session, you can expect:
Regular Therapy Sessions:
Consistent schedule based on your treatment plan
Ongoing skill building and behavior support
Progress tracking and data collection
Ongoing Communication:
Regular updates from your therapy team
Parent coaching and training
Monthly or quarterly progress reports
Treatment plan reviews and adjustments
Team Collaboration:
Coordination with other providers (speech, OT, school)
Family meetings to discuss goals and progress
Adjustments to therapy based on changing needs
